Privacy Policy

Mapeni Pay ("we", "us") gives businesses in Kenya an online shop, payment links, WhatsApp tools and related services at mapenipay.com and the shop sites we host. This policy explains what personal data we handle, why, and the choices you have. We process personal data in line with Kenya's Data Protection Act, 2019.

Who this covers

Merchants — people who sign up and run a business on Mapeni Pay.
Customers — people who buy from, pay or message a business that uses Mapeni Pay. For their data the business is the controller and we process it on the business's behalf.

What we collect

Account details: your name, phone number and email address, and your Google profile name and picture if you sign in with Google.
Business details: business name, address, logo, products, prices, documents you issue, and settings.
Orders and payments: customer name, phone number, delivery address, items, amounts and payment references from M-Pesa or card payments. We do not receive or store card numbers or M-Pesa PINs.
WhatsApp messages: when a business connects its WhatsApp Business number, the messages it sends and receives through Mapeni Pay, so it can reply, confirm orders and follow up.
TikTok: when a business connects its TikTok account, we receive its TikTok profile (display name, avatar, an account ID), follower, following, like and video counts, and the list of its public videos with their view, like, comment and share counts. We store the access tokens TikTok issues, encrypted. Videos the business uploads to post are held only until they have been sent to TikTok, then deleted from our servers.
Usage data: pages visited, device and browser type, and IP address, for security and to understand how the service is used.

How we use it

To run the service you asked for: shops, checkouts, payments, receipts, messages and posts.
To post to a connected TikTok account only when the business presses Post, with the caption and privacy setting it chose, and to show that account's stats back to the business.
To sign you in, keep accounts secure and prevent fraud.
To send service messages such as one-time codes, order alerts and billing notices.
To improve the service, using aggregated or de-identified data where we can.

We do not sell personal data, and we do not use customer data for our own advertising.

Who we share it with

Only with the services needed to run Mapeni Pay, each under its own terms:

Payment providers (Safaricom M-Pesa, Paystack) to take payments.
Meta (WhatsApp Business Platform, Facebook catalogues) when a business connects them.
TikTok, when a business connects its account and posts a video.
Google (sign-in, Search Console and Analytics where a business enables them).
Hosting, storage and messaging providers (for example Cloudflare and SMS gateways).
AI providers that draft replies or read price lists, only for features a business turns on.
Authorities, where the law requires it.

How long we keep it

We keep account and business data while the account is open. Order and payment records are kept as long as tax and accounting law requires. When a business disconnects TikTok, we delete its TikTok tokens and stop reading its TikTok data; videos already posted stay on TikTok, under the business's control.

Your rights

You can ask to see, correct or delete your personal data, object to its use, or ask for a copy. Email info@mapenipay.com. If you are a customer of a business on Mapeni Pay, you can also ask that business directly. You may complain to the Office of the Data Protection Commissioner of Kenya.

Security

Data travels over HTTPS. Access tokens and payment credentials are encrypted at rest, and access is limited to the people and systems that need it.

Cookies

We use cookies and local storage to keep you signed in and remember settings. Shop sites may use analytics that the business turns on; you are asked before non-essential cookies are set.

Children

Mapeni Pay is for businesses and is not directed at children under 18.

Changes

We will post any change here and update the date above. Material changes are announced in the dashboard.
